An elderly Bonsai master and his wife find an orphan bear cub. It`s cute and cuddly (but illegal to own, according to the Emperor) so the bonsai master thinks he can use bonsai techniques to keep the bear small. At one point, Doukeshi the bear is made to look like a cat (so no on will notice). The characters discuss letting the bear go so he`ll be a real wild bear, but they are torn with love and can`t release him. Eventually a series of dreams teaches the bonsai master that you can`t always tame nature and that the truest love would be to let the bear go. With the recent release of Keiko the killer whale, The Bonsai Bear had additional relevance to how man relates to nature. Many messages permeate the story, but the appeal will always come back to the adorable baby bear. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
